Alloderm is effective in offsetting some of the effects of aging on our appearance, such as filling in fine lines and wrinkles, or plumping out the lips and restoring your cupid’s bow.

What is Alloderm?

Alloderm is a skin material made from donated skin. It consists of the collagen framework which gives skin its strength, as well as some proteins. The donor’s top layers of skin are removed during the processing.

  • It’s soft and pliable.
  • It causes no allergic reactions or inflammation. Once it’s settled into its place, your own skin grows naturally in and around it.
  • All donors are strictly screened by the U.S. Tissue Bank, which checks all medical records, social history, blood samples, and cause of death. The result is a safe substance that’s very effective.
  • It was first used to treat burns and its success led to use in plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as other dermatological procedures.

How does Alloderm work?

When grafted into place, it stimulates and accommodates tissue regeneration. So you can grow your own skin around this collagen framework, and it all becomes new skin.

It’s usually more effective than any synthetic material, because your body recognizes it as human tissue and therefore doesn’t try to reject it.

As your own cells grow and spread into the Alloderm collagen structure, they take it over, so that eventually, no-one would know any Alloderm was ever there.

After the procedure

  • There may be some sutures.
  • Dr. Fante may prescribe an antibiotic.
  • You’ll need to keep a dressing over the site as it heals.
  • At first the area may feel too firm, but it’ll soften as it heals.
  • Be very gentle with the site for several weeks, to allow the little blood vessels to grow into the graft, and your own cells to take it over.
  • Within 2 weeks you’ll notice great improvement. The complete healing takes between 2 and 6 months.
