What is collagen and why do we need to replace it?

Collagen is a fibrous protein that all vertebrates have. It’s the main element of skin, and forms a framework for the dermis (the underneath layer of skin).

As we age, it becomes weaker, especially if we spend a lot of time in the sun without any sunscreen. Without the support from youthful collagen, our skin begins to sag.

Of course, the constant pull of gravity also helps our skin to sag. And so does the fact that on older people, the skin retains less fat, so it’s less full and supple.

The wrinkles that respond best to collagen replacement are those formed by sagging rather than by years of muscle activity:

The use of lasers

Dr. Fante uses a Sciton laser system is capable of doing many cosmetic procedures, non-ablative collagen replacement being one of them.

  • Each treatment will stimulate cells called fibroblasts to create new collagen
  • The laser won’t damage the surface of your skin
  • A cooling spray is used to cool your skin and protect nerve endings
  • No needles are necessary
  • The treatment takes about 10 minutes

Recovery time

There’ll be some slight redness immediately afterwards, but makeup can usually be applied. You can return to work right away.

Further treatments

  • Usually the best results are achieved with 4 to 5 treatments spaced a month or so apart
  • After that, a treatment every 3 months or so will maintain your youthful smoothness

In general, results vary depending on age, skin type, skin condition, and the number of treatments done.
