What conditions does blepharoplasty change?
Blepharoplasty can remove bags under the eyes and correct droopiness of the lids, but it doesn’t remove crows’ feet or replace the skin’s elasticity lost because of sun damage or aging.
Dark circles under the eyes can be due to under-eye bags, in which case they’ll be improved when the bags are removed. But a general darkness of skin color under the eyes isn’t always removed by blepharoplast.
Can a blepharoplasty be done along with other facial cosmetic surgery?
Yes, it’s often done in conjunction with a browlift, which raises the eyebrows, to give the eyes a more open, rested look.
Who can have blepharoplasty?
Anyone who’s over 18, healthy and willing to have a reasonable expectations. Certain conditions affect the details of eyelid surgery and should be discussed with Dr. Fante to optimize your outcome:
- Thyroid disease
- High blood pressure
- Dry eyes
How is eyelid surgery done on Asian eyes?
Blepharoplasty is sometimes done on Asian eyes for a different reason than it’s done on Occidental eyes.
For Occidental eyes, the surgery is usually to correct droopiness caused by age. This is sometimes also the reason for eyelid surgery on Asians.
For Asians, it’s also often done to create a wider look to the eyes and is often called “double eyelid surgery”
There’s a thing called the epicanthal fold, a piece of tissue which drapes over the inner part of the eye. In most Occidentals, it’s barely visible, whereas in most Asians, it’s quite evident.
When it’s adjusted surgically, a new crease is formed which gives the eyes a different look, and also causes the eyelashes to turn upwards, instead of being pushed downwards by that epicanthal fold.
Will eyelid surgery affect my eyesight?
Only temporarily, if at all. You may find in the first weeks after the surgery that your eyes:
- May tear up more than usual
- Be more light-sensitive
- Have some trouble focusing
- Feel a bit itchy or burning
Can the surgery be done on both upper and lower lids at the same time?
Yes, certainly. This is a good way to do it so that you need only go through one recovery period.
Will I have any scars afterwards?
All incisions leave scars. These incisions are very tiny, and are either placed strategically inside existing creases, so the resulting scars will be virtually invisible, or alternatively are hidden completely inside the eyelid. When rarely needed, there are cosmetics that will camouflage these little scars very well.
