Two types of bothersome veins can be treated with a laser:
- Spider veins – tiny veins that develop inside the skin on the face and legs
- Varicose veins – distended veins beneath the skin which often look bluish and can be painful. They’ve lost their ability to circulate blood, which is why blood pools inside them, swelling them up
If you have both of these, the varicose veins will need to be treated first; otherwise, the spider veins will keep recurring, if they’re treated while the varicose veins are still present.
The laser treatment of spider veins
When the laser light is applied to the skin containing these spider veins, it makes them shrink, and the tiny amount of blood in them coagulates.
- No anesthetic or sedative is required
- There’s some mild discomfort
- Immediately afterwards, the spider veins will look darker, but over 2 or 3 weeks they’ll fade
- About 3 treatments are required, at 3-month intervals, to completely eliminate the veins
- If the treated veins are in your face
- There may be some slight bruising which will fade in about a week
- Two, three or four treatments may be required
- After each treatment a little makeup will enable you to go anywhere you’d like
Older treatments of varicose veins
Until recently, varicose veins were treated by being either:
- Blocked from receiving blood flow by injections of chemicals (sclerotherapy), or
- Removed from the body (stripping).
Laser treatment is much more effective
- A small, very thin catheter is inserted into the vein
- Laser energy is applied to the inside of the malfunctioning vein
- The heat seals the vein closed
- Other healthy veins take over the blood flow in the leg
- It’s done on an outpatient basis
- Only over-the-counter pain medication is necessary
You can go home afterwards with just a Band-Aid over the site.
